The Fruits of our Labor

I finally turned some heads on streamers today but could not seal the deal on any of them. in between the morning and late afternoon streamer fishing me and scott nymphed the hell out of some browns. we caught quite a few fish between us including several just over 20". small sows and a jerry's baetis (modified pheasant tail) were on point once again. the flows had been bumped up since i was there a few weeks ago which is nice cause it alleviates all the stagnate holes and provides some current through them. with the temp's in the high 30's, low 40's, the fish were pretty active.

Slumpbuster

This is one of my patterns tied up for a streamer swap. not my photograph but my fly. a simple little pattern that for some reason i just haven't thrown to much but it is a long time proven pattern in the fly fishing world.

tail-cream bunny strip tied in at the bend of the hook then pulled over the body and tied off.

body- black ice dub or equivalant.

legs-brown rubber legs.

collar-brown rabbit strip palmered 2 turns or so.

head-tungsten cone.

CDC Loop Wing Emerger

This is a pattern that pat (4wt extreme angling) turned me onto a few years back. it has fished really well either nymphed or fished as a dry. i had my best day ever on dries, and it was with this fly, a few years ago. not only does it fish well but it is easy to tie.

Tail-partidge feather fibers

Body-goose biot(color depends on hatch)

Wing-long cdc feather tied in behind thorax then pulled over and tied off

Thorax-dubbing (on this one i used peacock ice dub, but usually just use an olive dubbing)

Hot Wire Caddis

This is a pattern that i have not tied in awhile. although i find it a sweet looking pattern, i have only had moderate success with it. i tie these in olive, chartruese and rust.

body-rust colored wire
shellback-flat black floss pulled over every 4th or 5th wrap of wire
legs-partidge
wing-2 white goose biots tied in like a prince nymph then a few strands of pearl krystal flash on top.
dubbing-chocolate antron woolhead-silver bead

Today i went out to a beautiful stretch of river that i enjoy so much. it was good to see that most of the shelf ice and anchor ice had disapated. the water look really good. temp's were in the low 30's when i arrived on the scene. i quickly rigged up and went to work. the day was slow for the most part with a few fish here and there. pig stickers, soft hackles and a baetis pattern pulled fish. in one stretch i found an over abundance of goldens or skwalas, can't remember which, and a lot of salmon fly nymphs as well. about the 1/2 pint of my day i thought i'd seen tire tracks headed further up the road, past where it was plowed. i quickly found out that those tracks had stopped and then i was stuck. after about 40 minutes of trying to get out, and making some progress, wally, the only guy that lives year round in that area, had a tow strap and was able to pull me the rest of the way out. i drove down to point that was lower then i had fished on the river. the first good hole i came to proved to be the money hole. i fished it for bout an hour and pulled a good dozen fish out of it, including my bigger fish of the day. a black/yellow pat's rubber legged stone was the meal ticket. 3-4 weeks ago me and jerry had a helluva time fishing there cause of all the ice, but today ended up being much better.

The Big Sexy

I think i will call this fly the big sexy. it's tied so that it forms a really nice taper from front to back and has great sculpin type colors. for me it reeks of aggressive browns. the one thing i'm not quite sure about is if the tail might be a little long. i guess it depends on how the fish hits it. i guess in due time i will find out.

Just Farting Around

Ordered a some different dubbing material to create some heads on some streamers. just farting around a bit and seeing how it looks. looks alright but i need to find some color combos that i like.
this bottom white one is quite a jalopy and measures 6 inches. was messing around with some different material combinations and it really came out like shit. i realize now that the trailing hook is also a bit small. NEEEEEEEEEEEEEXT!

Instead of Working

I was on call for work today so scott and i stayed close in case i got a call. the weather has been in the high 30's all week and today was no different. it was perfect out for a mid-january so i rigged up with streamer. the water was still pretty low and i could not move any fish on a couple of different patterns. meanwhile scott was roping the fish on a pink grub type cheech pattern. i reluctantly gave up on the streamer fishing and switched to a nymph rig. a pink san juan worm and a furry fucker combo did not fail me. we were on the water from 9:30 till 3 and managed a little over a dozen fish between the 2 of us.some of these pics are mine and some are scott's.
