Sorry about the crowds, Mike. The books, shops and stories definitely hold true about the crowds, I guess. I wish I could have joined. Did you guys try above "Heber" (meaning how far up did you make it)?
Utah is my stomping grounds, but I'm at a loss for where you were.

I've seen the same sort of fly logs on, um, a too-famous creek in the Idaho panhandle, too. They're consistently on the same logs, low enough to the water that they must be getting washed off by runoff so they must be new sets each year. I've also seen a few patches of them on mid-river boulders. Unfortunately, "creepy patches of flies under logs by rivers" isn't a good enough search phrase to find out any more about them.
